Nell'anno 1600, a proposito del Meridione d'Italia, Goethe scriveva....
"conosci tu il paese dove il limone fiorisce..."
Lemon; golden forms hanging pendulously from trees along the length and breadth of the Amalfi coastline's terraced groves which for the most part are of such a fine quality, with a clean fulsome taste that could never be referred to as sour, that they have come to be known as "bread" in so far as they can easily be enjoyed in slices, as a dessert, with or without the addition of a spoonful of sugar. These servings of lemon emanate a harmony of aroma and taste, delighting the palate with its freshness and zest.
And it is from the peel of this citrus fruit that, in the last century, the first commercial lemon liqueur was created.
Legend has it that the origins of this beverage lie in the well-known home-made "rosoli" drink and that the process was developed in various convents. We know for a fact that by the beginning of the 17th century the nuns of the Santa Rosa convent in Conca dei Marini were preparing a famous pastry dish, "sfogliatella Santa Rosa", and giving it its authentic taste by adding a measure of lemon liqueur.
Taking up this ancient recipe, the
liqueur distillery has continued the centuries old tradition of producing a fine beverage to be enjoyed as a post-dessert "digestivo" or at any time of day.
